GRAPE MARS

About

A research tool from a research group

GRAPE MARS is built at Universitat Jaume I in Castelló, Spain, for the GRAPE research group. It exists because the group needed it for its own studies.

The group

GRAPE stands for Group for Research on Academic and Professional English. It is a research group at Universitat Jaume I.

The group studies discourse and multimodal communication: how people use words, gesture, gaze and other modes together, in academic and professional settings. Much of that work starts from video, and video needs careful, repeatable coding.

The tool

A researcher marks time ranges in a video, names who is speaking, transcribes the talk, and counts the marks. The counts become charts in a workspace. The charts become Excel sheets, R files, ELAN files or a Word report.

This site replaces an earlier GRAPE MARS, a desktop tool the group used before. Projects from that version import into the new one with their libraries, videos and annotations.

Transcription and linguistic tagging run on the site at no cost to the user. AI suggestions for annotation are announced but not live yet.

Open to collaboration

The tool is made for one group, but it is not closed to others. If you work with video in discourse, education or communication research, you are welcome to try it.

We are also glad to hear what you would need from it, and to talk about joint work.

Contact

Questions about using the tool are answered in the help center. If it does not fix your problem, the contact page tells you where to write and what to include.
